Boye 4 in 1 Crochet Tool Review and Giveaway!

Cool Tool Review and Giveaway!

Boye 4 in 1 Crocheting Tool

Boye 4 in 1 Crocheting Tool

I have seen the Boye 4 in 1 Crochet Tools popping up all over the online crocheting community.  They are currently only available at select Wal-Mart stores, and can’t be purchased online. They shared on the Boye Knitting and Crocheting Facebook page that they are currently not available anywhere on line. Of course they immediately peaked my interest!  What a great concept to have 4 hooks in one.  But, do they actually work?

I set out searching, and by the third Wal-Mart I visited, low and behold, there they were.  I scooped them up and brought them home anxious to give them a go.

Let me start by saying Boye hooks are actually the brand of hooks I use and prefer. I am a fan of the tapered hooks so this was the first plus to this tool. I however, do not like any hooks with grips or added handles. They aren’t comfortable for me to use so I was a bit skeptical about the handle. With these things in mind, I grabbed my yarn and gave it a go.

Each tool has 4 different size hooks tucked away inside the handle.

The teal tool has a US D or 3.125mm, US F or 3.75 mm, US H or 5 mm, and US J or 5.75 mm.

The purple tool has the alternating sizes, US E or 3.5 mm, US G or 4.25 mm, US I or 5.25 mm and US K or 6.5 mm.

Things I heard before trying the tool:

“The handle is too hard to hold onto.”

Remember I said I don’t like big handles, but this really didn’t bother me. It was awkward at first, I’m used to holding a longer slim hook. Of course it feels different. It didn’t keep me from using it.  After a bit of use I was able to find my comfortable position to hold it and work quite efficiently with it.

“The hooks don’t lock in place.”

Okay, nope they don’t, however, they are fairly firm in their placement. When I sped up or worked more aggressively it pulled back slightly on just two of the hooks. For the teal it was the H and J hooks and for the purple it was the I and K.  The other two hooks on each tool, when held the way I hold my hooks, folded to the front not the back so they had no give when I was working.

I think that this could change between users depending on whether they are left handed or right handed, and how they hold their hooks. I think whether you hold your hook like a pencil or a sword will make a difference in your comfort with this tool.

Overall Opinion:

I love it. It may not be a Go To hook, but it is a perfect To Go hook.  Of course I prefer my regular hooks, one at a time, no bulky handles, but what a fun tool to have in my collection! It will be great to have in my bag and on hand for those times I’m on the go and can’t seem to find a hook.

Do you want one? I’m giving one TWO away!

I have always wondered what thrill my husband got carrying his Swiss Army knife! Now I could totally imagine what he feels because I am sure I would feel the same way if I was lucky enough to carry this around with me all day, this is a “woman’s” version of it! I have looked high and low, searched all over the Internet and have gone to three states so far, and no luck in finding them! Until they carry them in my state of Connecticut, it looks like I am stuck drooling over yours! 😉

Good luck everyone.

I would love to win one, my chance at getting one anytime soon is slim given my location is a hot and happening spot for new things in Walmart, that given I would love to try this. I have hooks everywhere and this would be great for back and forth to the trailer.
It may also help me and my arthritis. My fingers and hands are giving me a lot of grief this summer and my very first grandchild is due in September…I’m wondering if something like this might even help me with that issue.

Becky- unfortunately this is not something I have any control of. When you posted, there were boxes you have to check that will send the comments to your email. They should not be automatically checked. I would suggest deleting your original comments and re-comment, making sure you don’t check the boxes. (I have not tried, but would assume this should correct the problem.) I have no control on the settings on your end.

Sorry you are getting overwhelmed with emails. Hope you can get it resolved.

Like a swiss army knife for crochet hooks? Haven’t seen these on the shelves here. Neat. Thanks for the review. You discuss the handle and people giving feedback it’s hard to hold…wonder if it’s a plus for ergonomics. Thoughts?

    Reply
    1. Sheri Goad (Post author)

Since I’m not a fan of ergonomic handles, I can’t really say. I think they are going to be a different fit regardless of what your usual style may be. Something you would have to get used to. From my view…going from the straight handle, it was not so difficult to find a comfortable way to hold it. I would think it would be easier to adapt though if you are already used to dealing with a bigger handle.

These look like hooks that would fit well in my huge hands. My hands are built big and the skinny little hooks always feel like they are dropping down. Your contest would be a great chance to win hooks that look comfortable. I would also like a chance to take them with me to travel Canada. I would show them off everywhere and tell walmart.ca to please carry them.

I often have to wait for the cows to come in, or a heifer to give birth. Dehorning paste takes four hours, and I don’t like to leave the babes alone…

I would LOVE to have one of these. I have searched and not found one anywhere from Central Arkansas to New Orleans, LA. I never seem to have the size I need when traveling, this would solve that problem. I also have arthritis and I like the larger handles. You are an awesome person to do this…

I have not tried these or even heard of them, What rock am I under right? LOL. These would be perfect for me, As a mom of two we’re constantly here and there, and with this “on the go” hook it would be more convenient to crochet when out and about. Since I’m typically one to not take my hooks with me over fear of forgetting one somewhere or losing one in the car. This is four in one and folds up to easily fit in purse or diaper bag! A

I completely understand everything you said about being out of your comfort zone with other hooks. I use Boye also. I was thinking that with the shape it would be a little odd holding them, but then again, it would probably be ok in the long run after you get use to them. I would love to have a set of them. I saw a saying on face book a couple of weeks ago,,,and it is soooo me. I don’t go anywhere without my yarn! …lol If I don’t have time while I’m gone, at least I had it with me for if and when I do.

Thank you for the review. Thank you for clarifying that you prefer Boye hooks. I’ve always (44 years of crocheting) been a Susan Bates fan because of the shape. I get/maintain gauge easier and pull through is easier for me. I do like/need handles BUT only certain brands like Clover soft touch and Tulip Etimo. I’ve bought and tried all the handle ones I’ve come across but these two are the only ones I continue to use, even though the hook shape is not like Susan B. It has to do with how close the handle comes to the actual hook. My grip is pencil style, holding closer to the hook, so if a handle is back further, It’s not a handle for me, it’s dead weight and extremely tiring. Just looking at the pictures of this 4 in 1 Boye, I think it’s the dead weight kind. Thanks again for the review and giveaway. Congrats to whoever wins.

I shared you link on Facebook so others wondering if these hooks work can read about your experience with them. You must have a wonderful hubby that would walk into the yarn section and find more hooks for you. Mine doesn’t like to go anywhere near that section of the store, specially if we are together, he knows I am going to have to “browse” the yarn selection…

Much easier to pack up and you may not have to worry about the end of the hook poking through your bag. I wonder how airport security will handle these? I did find them at my Walmart here in Las Vegas where they are being sold for $7.98 each. I have not had an opportunity to make use of them yet, but am really looking forward to being able to try them out. The post has been shared on Facebook! I would love to try this new hook(s). I was recently diagnosed with arthritis in my thumb. Due to the pain I am only able to crochet a little each day. I am hoping that with the bigger handle my thumb wouldn’t hurt as much and I could crochet more. Thank you!

I would love to win this tool. Boye is my favorite hook and if I had this tool, it would be much easier to take along my crocheting. I take my father in law to most of his doctor appointments and while I wait, I crochet items for a local charity that gives my items to young ladies who need help with their newborns. I crochet hats, blankets, sweaters and the like for newborns and larger babies as well. Thank you for considering me. God bless. 🙂

I saw them at WalMart the other day, and thought that I would pick one up after my food shopping. Big mistake! Both sizes were GONE! It looks like it would be a great travel hook. I am constantly “losing” my hooks between the seats or under the seats when I travel. With a handle this large, that probably wouldn’t happen.

I love in Florida. We are the LAST to get anything new that is crochet related. I have looked everywhere and I can’t seem to find them! I would LOVE to add this to my crochet hooks! It would definitely keep me from losing them all of the time. Thank you for doing a review of them. I want them more now. Lol

I use crochet as a tool to manage my ADD and Anxiety. With that being said i am always losing my hooks.it would be nice to have a tool like this that contains the 4 most commonly used hook sizes together in one holder. I know my local Wally doesn’t carry this tool but have not lost faith in acquiring one eventually. This article has convinced me to give this tool a try for sure!

This would come in handy for me. I have co-workers that want me to show them how to crochet. I could just pull the 4 in 1 crochet tool out of my bag, grab some yarn and show them. Plus whilen I’m waiting on doctor or waiting in the car when in running my brother is in the store. He was in an accident resently. He is ok. Just trying to save for another car.

I’m currently on vacation. So of course I headed to my local walmart to buy one. I am always the first to try new gabgets in my crafting circle. Such sadness, no hooks. I had a cart full of yarn. Bought the yarn and left. Sadly I will have to wait until I get home unless I’m fortunate to win them here. Can’t wait to try these. Will definitely make vacationing so much easier!!

WOW. At this posting, over 700 comments here. OF COURSE, I want both. The nearest Walmart has pretty much closed the craft department, but I see myself getting these in the future ( if I don’t win them here, hehehe ). I think the novelty of it alone is worth having. The price is fair as well. I have not seen so much interested generated in a crochet tool in years. Its just… very cool. Everyone I know who crochets wants these tools. Good luck to everyone.

I would love to try this hook. It seems like a handy thing to leave in my purse in case I forget my hooks at home, which I sometimes do, so then I’m just carrying around a WIP. It’ll also make packing for housesitting easier since I won’t have to bring my entire crochet hook case–just the multitool, scissors, and a yarn needle.

I would definitely like to give this a whirl … i read your review and seems like it can be workable to any way you hold your hooks. I love to crochet … All the time! Since there are somee things I make I have to use different hooks Think this is an awesome idea … No hunting down hooks … I myself like the feel and comfort of a thin needle … But I’m sure I could find a way to make it work. I’ll have to hunt one down. Thanks in advance should I be a lucky one!

I would love to win the Boye 4 in 1 hook. I have not tried one yet but I know I’m tired of losing my hook from my purse. I keep a hook with me at all times because I like to try out the yarn I might be buying to get a feel if it will be soft enough or the right texture for my project. Thank you for being honest with your review about some of the minor querks with the hook. Good luck to everyone!! Shared on Facebook.
