One of the most successful internationally syndicated television series ever, as well as one of the world's most beloved children's shows, Sailor Moon dominated Cartoon Network's schedule in the mid-'90s. The series follows the story of Usagi, a teen girl who, with the help of a talking cat named Luna, realizes that she's actually a Sailor Soldier, and must fight for peace and justice while also going to school and attempting to live a normal life. Besides featuring great portrayals of female friendship, Sailor Moon is also known for introducing one of the first and most prominent queer couples to appear in Japanese media at the time. This came in the form of Sailor Neptune, a sensitive artist, and Sailor Uranus, a race-car driver and athlete. When fans inquired about the legitimacy of the relationship with creator Naoko Takeuchi, she stated that she definitely wrote the pair as a couple.

Even cis-het fans were impacted by being exposed to people unlike them that they grew to care about and empathize with. This series not only gave visiblity to queer teens, but showed both them and their straight peers that people just need to be exposed and educated to become the most steadfast of allies. Even more revolutionary than this, however, was how Sailor Moon tackled gender. And now that gender issues have really become a prominent element of the mainstream cultural conversation, Sailor Moon is proving more relevant than ever and in some interesting new ways.
The dubbed series was my first introduction to anime, which eventually blossomed into an all-out love for Dragon Ball Z , Yu Yu Hakusho , and plenty more. But there was something special about Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts as my first. The team of five girls with five very different personalities and powers captivated me, to a point where I would even borrow some of their evil-fighting moves during imagination playtime in the elementary schoolyard. Whenever that theme song came on fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight , me and my Bagel Bites were not to be bothered. Already totally obsessed with Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus saving the world, it of course was quite the delightful surprise when Sailor Neptune and Uranus were introduced during the third season.
The full run of the episode series will air uncut and uncensored. Sailor Moon follows the adventures of the Sailor Senshi, a group of teenage girls granted magical powers to protect the world from evil. Localized for North American audiences in the s, the series remains wildly popular in its native Japan while maintaining a dedicated stateside cult following. Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, an out lesbian couple whose romantic relationship was removed entirely in the English-language dub, will remain intact. Gay male characters Zoisite and Fisheye, who were presented as women in the North American release, will retain their original gender and orientation.
